Kate Crofton

Hi Kate, can you explain why you chose the name Cochine for your perfume brand?

I wanted to choose a name that evoked the romance and eternal elegance of Saigon and Indochina, which had made their way into cinema, like in the movie Lover.

I know that you once held a very important position at a famous brand, so why did you give it up to found Cochine?

In 2007, my husband got a job in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, I felt overwhelmed by the special charm of this city, from the small streets fragrant with jasmine and filled with bougainvillea in District 2 where I lived, or the interesting French-style architectural works.

I realized that instead of bringing a brand from Europe to Vietnam, I had the opportunity to create a premium Vietnamese brand to bring to Europe and the rest of the world.

I started researching different plants and different essential oils of Vietnam and then discovered very unique essences from magnolia and agarwood.

Luckily, I was introduced to a family who owns a perfume brand in New York.

What were your challenges when starting Cochine?

For me, it’s patience.

I think my experiences have helped me a lot in being patient and not compromising on what’s good in between.

What philosophy do you want to convey in Cochine’s products?

I have always had a great passion for perfumes and how they can capture moments of time and memories.

In Europe, and of course especially in France, there is a long history of perfumers.

Vietnamese culture also has a profound influence on the way we build our brand and products: Our logo is in the shape of a lotus flower, our packaging is also inspired by the horse leather items that I use.

Do you have any advice for women who want to start a business?

I will always want to say: “Go ahead and do it”!
